Guidelines on Screening Procedures

Guidelines on Screening Procedures

The goal of health promotion and education is to help prevent disease in patients. However, this is not always successful, and disease it not always preventable. With disease, early detection is ideal, often making screening procedures a routine part of clinical care. Unfortunately, many patients do not utilize these health services. This can be attributed to lack of awareness or access to care, financial concerns, or even levels of comfort with health care providers. In your role as the advanced practice nurse, you must be aware of potential obstacles for patients and implement strategies to ensure patients receive necessary screenings. Although a variety of screening procedures are recommended for women at various stages of life, not all screenings are appropriate for all patients. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each screening, as well as current guidelines for use is essential to effectively facilitate patient care. For this Discussion, the course Instructor will assign a specific topic for you to research.

To prepare:

Review this week’s media presentation, as well as Chapter 6 of the Tharpe et al. text and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services article in the Learning Resources.

Research guidelines on screening procedures for heart disease

Reflect on strengths and limitations of the screening guidelines.

Consider how the guidelines might support your clinical decision making.

Post on or before Day 3 an explanation of the guidelines on screening procedures for the topic assigned to you. Include an explanation of strengths and limitations of the guidelines. Then , explain how the guidelines might support your clinical decision making.

Cigarette Packaging

Tobacco companies are required to include warning labels on cigarette packaging. It has been recommended that they illustrate the effects of cigarette smoking. These images are quite graphic; examples include diseased lungs and a man exhaling cigarette smoke through his neck by way of a tracheotomy hole.

Respond to the following questions:

1. How do you feel about these regulations?

2. Will this type of packaging make a difference in the number of people who smoke? If not, can you think of other ways to encourage people to quit or prevent others from starting this habit?

3. Do you think these kinds of labels should be used to deter people from purchasing unhealthy foods? For instance, should soda labels have pictures of rotting teeth?

Topic 2: Patient with severe cognitive impairment (SCI) should not be denied organ transplants.

Topic 2: Patient with severe cognitive impairment (SCI) should not be denied organ transplants.

This topic seeks the support that this type of patient with severe cognitive impairment should not be discriminated in receiving organ transplant. Is important determine the urgency of transplant for example prioritizing the sickest patient.

Topic 3: Should Researchers Share Genomic Results With Participant’s Relatives?

In many types of human research, individual findings might not matter much to anyone besides the participants themselves. Genomic research is a bit different; first- degree biological relatives share 50% of the participant’s genetic material . If researchers discover that a participant carries a gene linked to a dangerous but possibly preventable disease, they know that the participant’s relatives may also carry the gene. Warning these relatives could save lives – yet this rarely happens. Why?

Support- participants should control access to their individual results.

The leader of a local health care organization, Cindy Janowski, has noticed leading organizations successfully implement quality improvement plans.

The leader of a local health care organization, Cindy Janowski, has noticed leading organizations successfully implement quality improvement plans. Cindy wants to ensure that her organization keeps current with those organizations’ quality standards. She has hired you to research the industry’s quality standards and to learn how to improve quality in her organization.

Cindy sent you an e-mail that states:

Good morning,

Per our earlier conversation, I just wanted to make sure that we are on the right track, and that I understood everything. I have put together a list of additional information needed. If you can provide more details, that would really help me out:

    • Analyze the purpose of quality management in the health care industry.
    • Identify how various health care stakeholders define quality.
    • Identify roles in health care related to quality improvement.
    • Explain what areas must be monitored for quality.
    • Explain what accrediting and regulatory organizations are involved in quality improvement and their roles.
    • Explain external resources and organizations that provide quality improvement information.

Thanks for your help with all of this!

AACN Competencies and the school Mission, Vision, and Outcomes

AACN Competencies and the school Mission, Vision, and Outcomes

According to a Gallup poll completed in 2013, 82% of respondents indicated that they believe nurses have high to very high levels of honesty and ethical standards, and nursing has been rated as the most trusted profession for several years (Gallup, 2010). What other values and characteristics are associated with the nursing profession? Which ones are the most professionally, academically, and personally significant to you?

For this Discussion, you will consider the alignment of qualities outlined by the AACN with those promoted by Walden University.

You will examine the AACN document appropriate for your degree path and consider how you can incorporate either the Essentials or the Quality Indicators into your academic endeavors.

To prepare:

  • Consider the competencies presented in The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice (for DNP students) or The Research-Focused Doctoral Program in Nursing: Pathways to Excellence (for PhD students) in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Examine Walden University’s mission, vision, and university outcomes.
  • Review the media presentation Introduction: The Doctor of Nursing Practice, which includes Dr. Joan Stanley’s comments about the AACN’s vision for the DNP degree.
  • Identify commonalities among the concepts presented in each of these items.
  • Think about your professional and academic goals. Consider how Walden’s standpoint and the AACN’s perspective fit with your objectives. Based on this information, what ideas do you have for incorporating a commitment to social change into your academic and professional plans?

By Wednesday 6/7/17, post 550 words essay in APA format with 3 references from the list below, that include the level one headings as numbered below:

Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

1)       Describe one or more significant ways in which Walden’s standpoint (i.e., vision, mission, social change message, and outcomes) relates to the AACN competencies as well as to your professional and academic goals.

2)       Articulate a plan for incorporating social change into two of your professional and/or academic goals.
